“Challenging Assumptions”

The syntax I like to use is challenging a theory. We all have theories and usually they are based on trial and error and are deeply embedded in our conscience.

Assumptions have the connotation of something inherent.

The thing is, is how would we know? Can we go back and pinpoint every experience? everything we have read ?or some other opinion that we mimicked?

And if it is entirely theoretical, no experimentation has taken place, then theory is an even better word for it.
